Dig In:
Passage: 2 John
Dig Deeper:
Chapter Summary
v1-3 - John's second letter is not written to one particular lady, rather he's referring to the Church in general. The theme of this letter is clear right from the beginning in the repetition of two keywords: we must walk in truth and love. John's benediction (literally: 'good words') in v3 look really familiar, notice the subtle difference. Whereas Paul's often say 'may grace, mercy and peace be with you,' John makes it clear that grace, mercy and peace will be with you.
v4-6 - As he did in his previous letter, John reiterates that his command to love one another is nothing new; it's an expectation that God has always had. He reminds us that the best way to show love is to walk in obedience to all of God's commands.
v7-11 - John mentioned already in v2 that the truth lives in Christians. John encourages you to cling to that truth and not follow deceivers, which have plagued the church from the beginning.
v12-13 - John closes by underscoring the value of face to face interaction between believers. After a year of Covid regulations, we can certainly appreciate the truth that John writes here!
Old Testament Reference -
Leviticus 19:18 underscores that John's command to love one another is not a new command.

If this small book was the only portion of Scripture you had access to, what conclusions could you make from it about how to live the Christian life?
Rewrite v10-11 in your own words, using modern concepts (not just physical visitors, but media like TV, internet, music, etc).
