Romans 10 Reading Guide

Watch a short overview of Romans 10

Passage: Romans 10

Dig Deeper:

Chapter Summary

  • v1-3 - Remember the context of chapter 10; After announcing the awesome details of salvation in chap. 3-8, Paul is coming to grips with the awful reality that not all people experience this grace, and specifically Paul's own countrymen, the Jews, have rejected God's grace. But why? The answer to this question contains a stern warning for people like you. It's not enough for you to be zealous for God, but your zeal must be based on knowledge, which must be based on God's revealed truth. This is why you must keep reading God's Word each day.

  • v4-8 - Once again, Paul reiterates that Christ attained the perfect righteousness you need and then gave it to you.

  • v9-13 - These easy to memorize verses show just how simple salvation is: confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord, and you will be saved. Although it is just that simple, look at the implications of this profound phrase: - JESUS: The only begotten Son of God, who is fully God and fully man and who gave you the credit for His perfect life while paying the penalty for all of your sin. - IS: Notice the present tense of this verb. It's not that Jesus used to be, or someday will be Lord, rather, Jesus presently is and always will be Lord. - LORD: Not just your good buddy in the sky, or a great example for you to try and be, but rather the sovereign and omnipotent Lord of the universe who providentially controls all things for His glory and your good.

  • v14-21 - Since salvation is conveyed verbally (people must confess & believe), the Gospel must be spread by preaching. Paul finishes this chapter by compiling several Old Testament prophecies showing how Israel consistently rejected this preaching.

Old Testament Reference -

  • Deuteronomy 9:1-6 warns the Israelites in the desert they will always be tempted to think their blessings have come because of their efforts. The very next passage tells of how they abandoned God and set up a golden calf.

  1. If you only had less than a minute to explain to somebody what it means that "Jesus is Lord," how would you do it?

  2. Which short phrase did you dwell on yesterday? How did your understanding of that phrase change, or how did the phrase change your day?

NEW:

Dwell:

Keep one of these phrases in your mind throughout the day and come back to it often, asking God to speak to you through these words:

  • v2 - Their zeal was not based on knowledge

  • v9 - Jesus is Lord

  • v17 - Faith comes from hearing the word of Christ

Follow the AAA Prayer Pattern:

  • ACKNOWLEDGE WHO GOD IS: Our Father who holds His hands out all day long to His stubborn and disobedient people (v21)

  • ALIGN YOUR LIFE WITH GOD'S WILL: Pray that Jesus' Lordship will be present in every aspect of your life (v9)

  • ASK GOD FOR WHAT YOU NEED:
